Saints or Sinners?

A bountiful collection of portraits by artist Deborah McKendrick is on show at Mandurah’s All Malt Brewery until November 5. Saints and Sinners is peopled with McKendrick’s friends and Fremantle characters – musicians, actors, identities – portraits simultaneously ethereal and real enough to chat with.

Deborah has a fascinating career history in fashion, theatre, graphic and fine arts and her portraits demonstrate a variety of techniques and skills. From the smallest icons to the largest frames these are evocative, illuminating works that engage heart and mind, sparking thoughts and conversations about the nature of good and evil, beauty and passion.

A previous exhibition of her portraits sat comfortably within the majesty of St John’s church in Fremantle. Her works equally vibe with the quasi-industrial nature of their current exhibition space.

Pool tables, comfy couches, booths and al fresco seating offer plenty of options for patrons before, after and while viewing the paintings. The crowd is local, loyal and welcoming to newcomers. All Malt’s head brewer Andy Scothern and director Jen Scothern have created a venue combining traditional village pub, lounge room and music club. The kitchen serves a well curated burger menu.

And if you’re looking for a hands-on exploration of art, Deborah will run a self portraiture collage workshop from 9am to noon each Wednesday from November 5 to 19 at The Meeting Place in South Fremantle. For more information and bookings go to <www.deborahmckendrick.com>
